Busy Days at the New England Disc Golf Center

Exciting times in Southwick! First off, the Mountain Laurels are blooming and it’s almost time for the Spoonwood Classic. This year we sold out all 72 spots! That’s over a 100% increase from the Classic participation last year. We have 16 players registered in the pro division, and some of the top am players in the region, including a strong field of five women.

Drew and Chris have the course expanded to a challenging par 65, with a new hole (replacing 8 with “new 15”, with the appropriate re-numbering) and a couple of holes lengthened into par fives. The whites will be a good test for the region’s top players, and the red tees will challenge even the strong rec field.

All the Spoonwood Ridge tees now have large turf tees, and many of the fairways are lined with wood chips. After a very rainy spring, the grounds are drying out nicely.

While most of the focus has been on “the big course”, that’s not all that’s been happening at the NEDGC. A new batch of red Prodigy baskets have arrived. Three are now set behind the clubhouse on the putting green and the old DisCatcher Sports baskets on the Meadows are being replaced with the new baskets. They look great and catch well.

The Meadows back nine is “rough cut”, and now that things are drying out, construction will go quickly. Also, many of the Meadows front nine holes have turf “red” tee boxes. The Meadows is starting to show its teeth! From the red tees, hole eight clocks in at well over 300 feet. Now that thick growth to the right of the fairway comes in to threaten the hyzer route.

Upcoming events include the Spoonwood Classic on June 8, the regular Sunday 10 AM league rounds on Spoonwood White, and a special “Fireflies and Glo” round on the evening of Saturday, June 29. Glo play is free for the evening, with ‘smores all around.

If you’ve never seen the fireflies on the Meadows on an early summer evening, they are a sight to behold. We’ve got plenty of glo gear, come on out. Great night to introduce new players young and old to disc golf. We’ll be using 5 of the holes of the Meadows front nine, supplemented by a few temporary glo only holes. We’ll be set up by 7 PM though June sunsets don’t get truly dark until 9:30 or so.

Both courses are playing great and we’re all looking forward to a great summer.
